Description

Situated in Glasgow at the south bank of the River Clyde, Strathclyde Grain Distillery is owned by Chivas Brothers.

It was originally built in 1927, during a time of industrial depression and prohibition in the US.

However, despite this unstable start, the distillery has continued to grow from strength to strength, being rebuilt between 1973 and 1978 to increase production by 7 million litres per annum.

Whilst this grain whisky is predominantly used to develop blends, we were blown away by samples and had no option but to release this as a Single Grain.

Cask Type

Bourbon Barrel – Cask Number 110036

Approximately 190 litres in size, bourbon barrels are sent over from America after they have been used to mature bourbon whiskey. Before they are used however, they are toasted or charred on the inside. This process caramelises the wood sugars and influences the spirit with distinctively sweet tastes such as caramel and vanilla.

Food Pairings

Cheese
Soft and mild cheeses such as Camembert or goats’ cheese will compliment this whisky perfectly.

Meat & Fish
Fresh fish, especially salmon or trout. Seafood with samphire, oysters, crab or lobster would also make a very good match. The linseed oil notes of this cask, with the touches of smoke, will also be complimented by lightly smoked fish.

This whisky would also compliment top quality beef like Wagyu or Kobe.

Tasting Notes

Colour
A light golden harvest straw colour.

Nose
A mix of tropical fruits including mango and touches of banana intermingle with honey, vanilla and a mix of sweet meadow flowers. Lingering in the background is a hint of linseed oil.

Palete
Honey and vanilla come through first followed quickly by the linseed oil, giving a harmonious balance. Then tropical fruits emerge on the mid-palate, intermingled with soft spices and pepper with very well-integrated oak.

Finish
The honey persists for some time, to be succeeded by the spices, led by nutmeg. The very long finish ends with soft oak, white pepper and a touch of sweet smoke.
