The Inspiration
The story begins with the 1925 novel John Macnab, in which three well respected members of society find themselves in need of a cure for their boredom. They travel to Scotland and, under the assumed name “John Macnab”, they write to three neighbouring estates informing them of their intention to take a Stag, a Salmon and a brace of Grouse from their land and present it on their doorsteps within the next 48 hours, all undetected and without permission. With reputations gambled and skills tested, it is a story of sportsmanship, nerve and luck.
From the novel came the modern day “Macnab” challenge:
To take a salmon, a brace of grouse and a stag, all within one day.
To the uninitiated this may not sound too daunting a task, but invariably an attempted Macnab will turn out to be a Macnot.
